Hole Saw To Drill Tiles

When being faced with ceramic tiles, most people tend to forget that these tiles are man made and are extremely hard. Have you ever tried to drill a hole in tiles with the wrong drill bit and a drill that spun too fast? It’s nothing short of a disaster.

With ceramic tiles the best way to drill these tiles is with a sharp carbide or diamond drill bit. The drill bit is very important but so is the drill you are using. The drill must accommodate different speed levels so that you can switch the drill down to a slow speed. The third requirement to drill into ceramic tiles is one that’s not for sale. Can you guess what it is? In order to drill into ceramic tiles the operator, that’s you, must have a steady hand.

Most ceramic tiles consist primarily of clay. But this clay is coated with a thin glaze of silica. It’s the silica that that turns hard and gives the tiles the strength. But be careful when trying to drill through these tiles because once you penetrate the silica coating, the inner core clay is easily torn to shreds by the drill.

When drilling tiles always use brand new carbide tipped masonry drill bits and a drill that has a variable speed switch. Set your drill to slow and never use a hammer drill for ceramic tiles. The wrong drill bits or the wrong drill will inevitably result in cracked or shattered tiles. Never apply too much pressure this will also lead to cracked or shattered tiles.

What happens when you need to drill a large hole in the tiles? This can be done in a number of ways. The best option is to purchase hole saws that have diamond-cutting surfaces. Make sure that the hole saw you are using comes equipped with a pilot bit that drills a smaller hole in the middle of the bigger hole. This keeps the hole saw steady and keeps the larger bit from wandering or flying off.

Glass and other natural stones are also very hard materials and require diamond tipped drill bits and hole saws to cut through them. Diamonds are one of the hardest materials available to cut through hard materials. Having said that, diamond hole saws and drill bits are not designed to be used on wood or metal materials.

When working with glass, always inspect and check the hole saw prior to use. If the edge is damaged or blunt, this will cause the glass to crack.

When working with ceramic tiles or glass always use the most suitable tools. Also ensure that the tools and parts are clean and sharp.
