As people drive their cars they should think about the well drilling equipment used to bring the oil out of the ground.
Oil has to be found before well drilling equipment becomes important. It’s a geologist who finds the oil. Actually they only find locations where oil is likely to be found. There are a number of ways to determine if there is oil in a certain spot. In the old days it was primarily by observing surface conditions. That’s primarily done with satellites now. Now they also use seismic surveying – shooting sound waves through the rocks beneath the ground. They then interpret the reflections to determine areas likely to contain oil. In addition they use gravity meters to find slight gravity shifts that could be caused by oil flows. The final step is marking a likely oil location with a GPS device. It’s still not very precise. The success rate for identifying new oil fields is about 10%.
Once oil is found the site must be prepped to accommodate well drilling equipment. It’s a little bit like preparing food before using the pan and stove to cook it. There are impact studies to conduct to determine how drilling will affect the environment. The legal issues such as land rights have to be settled. Then the land itself, the drilling site, can be prepared.
It requires a little more work before the well drilling equipment can be brought to the site. Access roads are built, and then the area is cleared and leveled for easy access. Water must be drilled or piped onto the site. Finally they prepare a plastic lined pit where the rock, mud and other debris will be deposited. For some sites this refuse must be trucked away and disposed of somewhere else.
Its still not time for the well drilling equipment. The rig holes are made, then a rectangular put is dug. That’s where the rig and all the other equipment will work. Drilling can now begin.
